The Songhees First Nation mentor their young people with the Academic Youth Leadership program, passing on knowledge from their elders, and teaching the youth life skills.

Explains the Songhees Nation Student Facilitator, Charlotte Charlie, the group “have been together for three years…anything they decide to do, we just try and make it happen for them.”

The latest request from the youth group was cooking lessons.

And so, Charlie approached Esquimalt High School instructor and red seal chef Brandon Aris.

“It’s been great, because I get to connect with all these kids who may or may not come through my cooking classes at the school” explains Aris.

The cooking classes are a hit with the young people too.
